after: ʻTHE GREEN VIOLINISTʼ, Marc Chagall- 1924, Guggenheim, New York, United States of America.
Marc Chagall (1887-1985), a Russian émigré, like many other artists at the end of the 19th Century, went to Paris to seek his fortune. He returned to his homeland periodically, but finally settled in Paris in 1923. He met the Cubists, and later on, influenced the Surrealists. Chagallʼs preoccupation with dream-like imagery from Jewish-Russian culture permeates his entire work.
after: ʻTHE SPRINGʼ, Sandro Botticelli - 1478, Uffizi, Florence, Italy.
Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) lived, trained and worked his entire life in the northern Italian city of Florence, the home of the Renaissance. Botticelliʼs understanding of perspective, foreshortening, anatomy and architectural design was legendary. But it was the ability to turn his ʻdancingʼ line and use of colour into visual poetry that made him stand out. The ʻSpringʼ depicts figures based on ancient sculptures celebrating the arrival of spring. Botticelli has altered the language of painting by elongating figures and stylising the anatomy of the figures to connect with current ideals of beauty.
