after: ʻSELF-PORTRAIT IN A STRIPED T-SHIRTʼ, Henri Matisse - 1906, Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, Denmark.
This self-portrait of Henri Matisse in a striped t-shirt was painted in the artistʼs Fauvist period. The glowering face is accentuated by the green tones of the skin and complemented by the reds in the t-shirt. Similarly, the eyes are made the focal point in the painting by the blue surround.
after: ʻPORTRAIT OF ISABEL RAWSTHORNEʼ, Francis Bacon, - 1966, Tate Britain, London, England.
This is an uncompromising portrait Francis Bacon made of his friend, the artist Isabel Rawsthorne. Distortion of facial features and virtuoso use of paint enabled Bacon to reveal the inner nature of his subjects. Rawsthorne, like Bacon, spent time in Paris and was friends with leading artists such as Picasso and Giacometti. She was a co founder of the Fauvism along with Henri Matisse.
