BERT VAN ZELM

In 2005 I was commissioned to paint the portrait of the last 4 Dutch Queens for the Paushuize (a palace built by the Dutch Pope Adriano VI (1459 - 1523)). In former days the Queen used to sleep in the palace during her visit of the province. To commemorate this fact, the room where she slept is decorated with the portraits of the last 4 Dutch Queens: Beatrix, Juliana, Wilhelmina and Emma.

On the photos you see the painting in a conference room, two details of the painting, the photo of the provincial governor of the queen next to the painting and the article in the provincial guide. For a better look at the painting, go to the section portraits.

The portrait was made in the usual way; every Queen is painted 3 times in a horizontal row. The composition continues over all the canvasses. The colour orange is dominant because it is the colour of the Royal Family. Other returning items are the jewellery/crowns that meander over the canvasses.
