BERT VAN ZELM

As far as the used materials, I work with the traditional ones: oil paint, turpentine and sometimes oil mediums.

Usually I work on canvas. It has happened in the past that I continued works started in other techniques on paper or wood. I also work and have worked on a support existing out of more than one canvas.

I adjust my way of painting to what I try to achieve with the work. So different subjects lead to different ways of painting.

A very important aspect of my painting is that I also take paint off by scraping the layers. I try to get to an image that should look obvious, but when one gets close, the image should open up in a completely different way. A painting is a painting.

In the case of the multiple portraits the composition continues over the various canvases, all though each has to be autonomous as well. In other cases I have tried to get rid of the classical rectangular shape.
